Itinerary
The tour starts quite early in the morning between 7 and 9 AM.
You will be picked up from your accommodation (exact time is confirmed beforehand) by our private van along with the guide(s) who will be in charge of your safety and fun for the day.
We will then drive out of the city for about 45 mins. to the highest point of the tour known as “La Cumbre” or The Summit at 4.700 meters of elevation. At this point, the first thing you’ll notice is the amazing scenery surrounded by snow-capped mountains and a magnificent lake which make this place a perfect lookout point to begin the tour.
While here, we will get our equipment (mountain bikes) off the top of the van and provide you with all the necessary safety gear you will need.
After an exhaustive briefing by the guide in charge, we will be ready to safely ride down the “World’s Most Dangerous Road”.
In fact, the first section of the road won’t look that much different, with motor vehicles sharing the road with you. However, the impressive views with massive mountains and valleys that stretch for hundreds of kilometers into the lush subtropical lowlands of “Los Yungas” will be unmatched.
We ride along the right side of the road enjoying the first 20 km of smooth riding. We pass countless streams, bends, a couple of police checkpoints and a tunnel.
Once the adrenaline-fueled downhill on tarmac is over, at this point begins what is officially known as the World’s Most Dangerous Road (a.k.a Death Road). This is a dirt track that zigzags for about 40 Km. next to huge drops and cliffs on one side and a huge rocky mountain on the other. It owes its infamous name to the sheer number of deaths it claimed from motorized traffic accidents.
Fortunately, this stretch of road has been replaced by a newer and safer one (which we use to get back to La Paz) that is located on the other side of the valley, leaving the ‘Death Road’ exclusively for us, mountain bikers.
From here on, it’s pure adrenaline. Our guide(s) will lead you riding safely, enjoying the warmer climate, views and lush surroundings. We pass under waterfalls, stop at lookout points in order to enjoy the setting and have our high-speed moments (when safe).
As it gets warmer and lower, you will see coca fields, fruit fields, farmers, and some wildlife. By the third hour of our tour we will be nearing the end of our ride. Once we’ve all safely arrived at the bottom, we will get all the gear off and head straight into a little town called “Yolosita” for a well-deserved cold beer or drink. We’ll then drive to our designated restaurant to enjoy our highly awaited lunch.
At approximately 4-5 PM, we climb aboard our van to start our trip back to the city, which takes some 3-4 hours through the new road to arrive safely in La Paz by around 6 -9 PM.
